A clog in a single sink is a nuisance. A clog in your main drain affects the whole house. Recognising the early signs gives you a better chance of dealing with it before wastewater reaches your basement floor.
1. More than one fixture is slow
If the kitchen sink, bathroom sink and tub are all draining slowly at the same time, the problem probably isn't in any one of them. They share the main line, and a restriction there affects everything upstream.
2. Water appears at the basement floor drain
The floor drain is usually the lowest point in the system. When the main line is blocked, wastewater looks for the easiest exit, and that's often the floor drain.
3. Toilets gurgle when other fixtures drain
Gurgling happens when air is pushed through water in a trap. If your toilet bubbles when the washing machine empties, that air is being displaced by water that can't get past a blockage.
4. Running water in one place causes a backup elsewhere
Water rising in the tub when you flush, or in the floor drain when you run the dishwasher, is a strong sign of a main line problem.
5. Sewage odours in the basement
Persistent sewer smells can mean wastewater is sitting in the line rather than flowing away. A dry floor drain trap can also cause odours, so try pouring water into it first.
6. Plunging doesn't help
If a plunger briefly improves one drain but the problem returns, the clog is probably beyond the reach of household tools.
7. Clogs keep coming back
Recurring main drain clogs often point to roots, a sag in the pipe, or a damaged section. Clearing restores flow, but a camera inspection can show whether there's an underlying cause.
What to do next
